About Borovets

Borovets Hills is an alpine-type resort that provides excellent opportunities for a range of winter sports. Twice hosting World Cup Alpine skiing rounds, the resorts biathlon track is one of the best in the world. Borovets ski slopes have a permanent snow cover from November to May that averages more than 1.5 meters.

Borovets lies at the foot of Mount Moussala in the northern part of the Rila Mountains at an altitude of 1350 meters, 73 kilometers southeast of Sofia, easily accessible by road.

Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian kings, Borovets developed into a modern ski resort with upscale accommodations, attractive local restaurants and an excellent network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountains, providing excellent opportunities for the whole range of winter sports – from Alpine and heli-skiing to cross-country skiing, ski jumps and biathlon, to snow-mobiling, snow-boarding, ice skating and more.

Comprehensive lift system, Snow-Making equipment, Lighted Ski Runs…

For downhill skiers and snow boarders, Borovets Hills offers 18 well kept and lift equipped ski runs totaling over 40 kilometers in length, descending from a high point of 2,560 meters above sea level, with a maximum vertical drop of 1,420 meters. The Borovets ski season runs from December through to April with a snow cover of more than 1.5 meters. It also has snow guns for producing snow, and some slopes are illuminated for skiing at night.

There are slopes of varying degrees of difficulty suitable for skiers of all skill levels. All ski runs are marked according to international standards with signs in several languages.

Excellent Borovets Ski Schools & Beginner Slopes

Borovets has an excellent ski school with over 200 professional ski instructors, speaking English, German, French and Russian. Group and private lessons are available at reasonable rates. Beginners start the week on the nursery slopes but by the end of the week everyone is heading for the gondola lift and the more challenging runs.


Winter Sports Rental Equipment

Rental and storage of ski equipment are readily available in Borovets. Borovets has many ski rental services, located next to the lift station around the ski runs. They offer sets of skiing equipment from world famous companies, as well as toboggans, sleds, etc. There are 3, 5 and 10 kilometer tracks for cross-country and biathlon skiing. Heli-skiing, ski jumping, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and horse-drawn sleigh rides are also available.

Visitors benefit from the peaceful mountain lifestyle, while still enjoying easy access to the capital Sofia, 73km (55 miles) away, and the city of Plovdiv, a 126km (76 miles) trip. Just 11km (6 miles) away is the town of Samokov, which is famous for its craft traditions.
